SURFER NAMED TO LIST OF TOP MAGAZINES ON INSTAGRAM
SAN CLEMENTE, CA., Sept. 13, 2012 – SURFER Magazine has been recognized as one of the top magazine platforms on Instagram by media industry authority MinOnline. With more than 90,000 followers, SURFER surpassed powerhouses like Sports Illustrated, Vogue and Men’s Health to land at number 15 on the list.
Instagram is an application well suited to SURFER and its audience for its photo sharing capabilities. Sharing vivid and compelling imagery of waveriders and other interesting people, as well as, exotic locales from around the globe is enticing not just to the surf community, but to a broader audience who may not have a subscription to the magazine. The feed takes the SURFER reader beyond the pages of the monthly print magazine with more candids and outtakes and as it is all happening.
“SURFER has always been regarded as the authority when it comes to surf travel and lifestyle photography,” said SURFER Editor Brendon Thomas. “Instagram has given us a platform to share these images with our fans, often as they are happening.”
In recent years, SURFER Magazine, part of Source Interlink’s GrindMedia group, has proven to be a leader in the realm of social media. The brand’s active and lively Facebook community (facebook.com/surfermag) has grown exponentially, currently with nearly 280,000 likes. Likewise, the brand maintains more than 50,000 Twitter followers (@SURFER_Magazine), and most recently, launched a Pinterest page that has been gaining traction with almost 2,000 followers.
“SURFER Magazine and our other GrindMedia titles have been the conduit to connect people to their passions for many years,” said Greg Morrow, GrindMedia Vice President, Digital. “Leveraging social media platforms like Instragram and Facebook is a natural extension of our strategy that allows our editors to enhance stories in print and become an authoritative guide to the substantive expansion of content via digital media.”
In 1960, SURFER Magazine began as the original. After a long history of delivering provocative and insightful editorial features, revealing interviews and award winning state-of-the-art photography, SURFER remains the authoritative voice of the surfing world and thus earned the moniker “the bible of the sport.” The SURFER brand has also grown to include Surfermag.com, Fantasy Surfer, and the SURFER message boards. All of these assets combine to make the SURFER network the most current and reliable channel of information to the surf community. The magazine is published by Source Interlink’s GrindMedia, which reaches more than 22-million active sports enthusiasts through an integrated network of magazines, online properties, events and television programming.
