NIKKI VAN DIJK WINS THE 2012 ASP WOMEN’S WORLD JUNIOR TITLE AT THE OAKLEY WORLD PRO JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

KERAMAS, Bali/Indonesia (Oct. 12, 2012) – Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) has won the ASP Women’s World Junior Title after defeating Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) in an epic Final at the Oakley World Pro Junior Championship in Bali. The surf was in the 6-foot range, with flawless tubes and walls reeling down the reef at Keramas, which set the stage for a hard fought title battle.

The 2012 Oakley World Pro Junior Championship selected prime conditions for the Women’s Final, running first thing on Day 7 of the contest to capitalize on the tide and fickle wind conditions at Keramas. Van Dijk and Buitendag were both well deserving Finalists, having scored six of the top 10 highest wave scores of the event between the two of them.

Van Dijk held the lead for the entire Final, using her smooth style to glide down the line and unleash an onslaught of crisp and powerful carves. “I was nervous the whole heat,” admitted Van Dijk after the Final. “I was shaky when I was trying to stand up! I think I was just so excited to be out there in such perfect waves.”

Despite the contest butterflies Van Dijk attacked each wave posting a two-wave heat total of 13.24 (out of a possible 20). She has strength, grace and a well honed read of the ocean. Tapping into this trifecta of skills enabled her to capitalize on the barreling sets and clinch the win. She will go down in history as the first surfer from Victoria, Australia to win an ASP World Junior Title.

“I’m so honored to win!” continued Van Dijk. “This is what I dream of, it’s amazing! To be here with my sister and friends is amazing. I know all my family and friends at home will be so excited! I’m feeling the best I’ve ever felt!”

Buitendag was a standout surfer all event, using powerful backhand surfing to storm through heat after heat despite the talent stacked draw. In the Final she struggled to execute and post the big scores as she’d done in earlier rounds scoring only an 8.93 two-wave heat total.

“I’m really happy with second. I came here with no expectations and to finish like this has been great,” Buitendag said. “Nikki [Van Dijk] surfed really well. I’m very happy for her.”

Buitendag will be surfing among the women’s elite next year as part of top 17 on the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour. “I want to thank Oakley for putting this event on, and God for giving us great surf,” continued Buitendag. “This event has been a great warm-up for me to get ready to surf on next year’s ASP Women’s World Championship Tour.”

The action continues on Day 7 with the Men’s Round 3 of the Oakley World Pro Junior Championship. The event waiting period runs from October 6 – 17. For LIVE webcast, event videos and more check www.oakleyprojunior.com.
