HAWAII OAKLEY SURF SHOP CHALLENGE WIN

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., May 15, 2013 —The biggest challenge for the 2013 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge Hawaii Champions, Team Hawaiian Island Creations (HIC), wasn’t the stacked field of competitors – it was the waves. Ala Moana Bowls produced an inconsistent one-to-two-feet for the one-day team contest that pits surf shops against each other for a chance to compete at the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge Championships in Bali. Despite the meager surf, Team HIC emerged victorious led by Ala Moana Bowls local Kekoa Cazimero.

“Bowls is my spot, brah,” said Cazimero, 23. “It was super small, challenging surf, but it just shows who the guys are that really know how to surf that wave and know where it’s going to break.”

The Oakley Surf Shop Challenge teams are comprised of two team riders and two shop employees. Cazimero, confident about all of his teammates’ surfing ability, is eyeing the overall championship in June.

“We want to go up there with the same game plan,” he said. “Everybody on the team surfs solid, and we have a legit team with two pro guys that ride for HIC, as well as two guys who work at HIC. We got good people and good strategy so we’re looking to win the whole thing in Bali.”

While Cazimero had the most local knowledge of Ala Moana Bowls, his teammate, Davin Jaime, had the flare in the small surf. Jaime, an HIC employee, was the only surfer to land a reverse 360 in the Final nailing an 8.8 out of a possible 10 points for that ride. He was a part of Team HIC in 2011 when they won the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge in Hawaii, back when the Championship was held in Huntington Beach, California.

“I’m psyched we won this year again,” said Jaime, 25. “I’ve been to Bali a lot of times and it’s like my second home. I’m looking forward to surfing really good waves because you know Huntington sucks, so we’re really glad to have a really good spot to surf [for the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge Championship].

Team HIC’s Joel Centeio echoed Jaime’s excitement for their upcoming trip to Bali. Centeio is a seasoned contest surfer, but he enjoys the team aspect of the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge.

“This contest is so much fun and obviously it’s different because it’s a team thing and you don’t want to let your team down,” said Centeio, 30. “I always look forward to this contest because our team is super solid.”

Pipe Dreams Surf Co. had a strong showing taking second place, with newcomer Drift Surf taking third and five-time champions Town & Country Hawaii coming in a disappointing fourth.

Along with a free plane ticket to Bali and spending money, HIC will combat six other regional qualifiers for $10,000 in the Championship event, held in June at Keramas. The series makes its final regional qualifying stop at Newport Beach, California at the end of May.
About Surf Shop Challenge

Originally conceived to provide a fun and competitive format for the hardcore surf shop riders, the SURFER Shop Team Challenge was one of the most popular and exciting Southern California contests of the early 1980s. Through the years the contest has evolved, with seven qualifying regional events around the country, culminating in a national championship in Bali, Indonesia for the first time in 2012. The underlying principles, however, have remained the same. The Oakley Surf Shop Challenge is still about giving back to the shops, the true backbone of the industry and the heart of the sport of surfing. Each year the competition level rises, the stakes become greater and the prizes become bigger.
Brown Wins Las Vegas GEICO EnduroCross Opener

Exciting opening round with the top four riders battling to the finish line

Las Vegas, NV (May 3, 2013) – Round one of the 2013 GEICO AMA EnduroCross series, fueled by Monster Energy and presented by Lucas Oil kicked off on Friday night inside the Orleans Arena and Mike Brown established himself as a serious title contender with a convincing main event win over Taddy Blazusiak and Colton Haaker. Brown led every lap and opened up a nine second lead but was only two seconds clear at the finish as Blazusiak, Haaker and Webb closed up while fighting for second.

Brown was strong all day and set the fastest time during the afternoon qualifying laps, won his heat race and then set the fastest time again during the new night time hot lap that determines the gate picks for the thirteen main event qualifiers. The new night time hot laps had the crowd on their feet and Brown set the fast time to get the first gate pick. Blazusiak, Webb, Graffunder and Redmond rounded out the top five.

Brown rocketed into the lead on the start of the main event and was closely followed by Blazusiak, his KTM Teammate. Brown, who switched from a KTM 250 to a 350 for 2013 steadily pulled away from Blazusiak and opened up a nine second lead but then proved that no lead is safe in EnduroCross as he got stuck in the last rock section. At that point, Blazusiak, Haaker and Webb had a fierce battle going on for second and were within sight of Brown as he blasted through the wood pile and over the finish line. Brown was happy with his second ever EnduroCross win and said “I put five hard laps in with no mistakes and the white flag came quicker than I thought it would. It feels good to get a win to open the season.” Blazusiak had an off night and said “I have a few things that I think I can make better for the next race”. Haaker, who is riding for the Rockstar Energy, Lucas Oil backed JCR Honda team rode well to take the final podium spot in spite of a tight race with Webb. “I got a good start from the second row and worked my way up to third and I felt like I could have made an aggressive move on Taddy in the second to last turn but I knew he would not give it up easily so I decided to check up”.

Webb, now riding a Beta two-stroke had to come back from a terrible start to finish fourth ahead of Geoff Aaron, who is now riding a Red Bull backed KTM 350. Monster Kawasaki’s Taylor Robert finished sixth ahead of Husqvarna’s Cory Graffunder, RPM KTM’s Kyle Redmond, Monster Kawasaki’s Justin Soule and Beta’s Max Gerston rounded out the top ten. Destry Abbot was eleventh, Jamie Lanza twelfth and Gary Sutherlin was thirteenth in the main.

The Women’s class had a first time winner as Shelby Turner beat fellow Canadian, Chantelle Bykerk. Rachel Gutish finished third. Maria Forsberg, the defending Women’s champion had a tough night and finished fourth and Louise Forsley, the second place women from 2012 missed the race due to injury.

The night also included support classes and Kurt Nicoll started the night off by winning the Vet 35+ class ahead of Ty Davis and Colby Begin. Tyler Murray won the Open Amateur class by taking the lead in the last turn from second place finisher, David Broderick. Gavin McCarthy finished third. Australia’s Jack Field wowed the crowd by pulling a backflip off the finishline log while taking the win in the TrialsCross class. Ty Cullins and Ty Tremaine finished second and third.

Round two of the GEICO AMA EnduroCross series will take place in Sacramento, California inside the Sleep Train Arena on Saturday, June 8th. You can get tickets at Ticketmaster, http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/1C004A48A4E0645E?artistid=1305969&majorcatid=10004&minorcatid=25

Las Vegas EnduroCross Track Map Revealed

A challenging track coming together for the 2013 season opener

Irvine, CA (April 30, 2013) – The opening round of the 2013 GEICO AMA EnduroCross Championship, fueled by Monster Energy and presented by Lucas Oil will take place in Las Vegas this Friday, May 3rd during the Monster Energy AMA Supercross finals weekend. If you have never been to an EnduroCross, you need to get out to Las Vegas early and witness some of the most exciting racing you will ever see. The track map reveals the “usual” brutal mix of rocks, logs, sand, tractor tires, jumps, and berms that challenge the skills of the world’s best off-road motorcycle racers. Add in a water pit that makes all of the obstacles more challenging as the water gets dragged around the track and you have a recipe for crazing racing.

Stacked Field Ready to Kick Off 2013 GEICO EnduroCross Series

Webb, Robert, Brown, Haaker, Soule, Redmond and Gruffunder look to challenge Blazusiak

Irvine, CA (April 29, 2013) – There is no doubt that Taddy Blazusiak, the four-time GEICO AMA EnduroCross, Fueled by Monster Energy Champion is the favorite to win the title again in 2013 but he will face a stacked field of riders gunning for the top spot. The remainder of the field has closed the gap in recent years and several of those riders have switched up their bike choice looking for the magic necessary to displace Blazusiak from the top step.

• Taddy Blazusiak – The four-time EnduroCross Champion will be difficult to beat again as he has his KTM 350 dialed in. The friendly Polish rider’s unbelievable mix of balance and aggression is fun to watch even when he is out front by himself.
• Cody Webb – The 2010 AMA Trials Champion had a great EnduroCross season in 2012 and concluded with second in the championship. Perhaps more important, Webb has made a switch to the Beta two-stroke and proved at the X Game EnduroCross in Brazil that he was capable of passing Blazuiak many times.
• Taylor Robert – The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider’s primary focus for 2013 is EnduroCross and after building his own test track last season, he showed great consistency and had three second place finishes in 2012. The 2012 WORCS champion is now ready to content for EnduroCross wins and the title.
• Mike Brown – The 2000 AMA Motocross champion and multi time WORCS Champion won the X Games EnduroCross event in 2012 to prove his that his skills translate to EnduroCross as well. For 2013, he makes the switch to the KTM 350 after several years of racing a 250 and perhaps that is the tool needed to beat Blazusiak.
• Cory Graffunder – The Factory Husqvarna rider from Canada quietly finished in fifth in the 2012 EnduroCross Championship and earned two podium finishes during the season. His off-road racing background helps him excel in the most difficult conditions and he continues to build on the aggression also necessary for the tight confines of EnduroCross.
• Justin Soule – Soule is one of the fittest riders on the track and he consistently works his way to the front. The Monster Kawasaki rider is still looking for his breakthrough event in 2013.
• Kyle Redmond – The quiet Californian has raced several different brands over the years and for 2013, he will be another rider making a switch to the KTM 350 that Blazusiak has used to dominate the past several years. With the Support of the RPM racing team, perhaps this is the magic ingredient needed to help him get a win.
• Colton Haaker – He got his first win at the 2012 Las Vegas EnduroCross season opener and had a second place finish in Ontario, California but lacked he consistency. A switch to a Honda 450 with support and guidance from multi time Baja Champion Johnny Campbell could make all of the difference for 2013.
• Geoff Aaron – An injury ruined his 2012 season and for 2013 he too has made a switch to a KTM 350 and the ten time US Trials Champion that has won two EnduroCross main events is looking forward to 2013.

Add in several more top contenders such as Canada’s Bobby Prochnau, Gary Sutherlin, Destry Abbott, Jamie Lanza (who will be racing a Husqvarna 125) and just making the main event looks difficult. Then you have Max Gerston, Ryan Sandoval, Bryan Roper and Keith Sweeten all chasing the Junior Championship, a Championship within a Championship for riders 21 and under looking to make their mark closer to the front of the field in 2013. This is shaping up to be the most exciting EnduroCross season yet.

Make sure you catch a round near you or watch all of them live online at via the www.EnduroCross.com and www.DirtRider.com websites or the Motor Trend YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/motortrend).
