Irvine, CA (May 16, 2012) – The X Games staff announced the X Games 18 Enduro X qualification process and pre-qualified riders a few weeks ago and five more riders have earned invitations. For both the male and female riders, the top two non-qualified finishers at the opening round of the GEICO AMA EnduroCross series in Las Vegas on May 4th would earn spots. Those riders are as follows:

Men’s Enduro X, top two finishing riders that were not already pre-qualified
Cory Graffunder CAN
Max Gerston USA

Women’s Enduro X, top two finishing riders that were not already pre-qualified
Louise Forsley USA
Chantelle Bykerk CAN

The X Games competition staff also extends “Wild Card” invites to top racers from around the world and there is perhaps no rider more deserving of this than eighteen year old Steward Baylor. The South Carolina resident won the 2011 Grand National Cross Country series XC 2 Pro class championship and has won five races of the first six races in 2012. On top of that, Baylor has won four out of five rounds thus far in the AMA National Enduro championship against a strong field of pro riders. Based on these results, Baylor has been invited to his first X Games Enduro X.

“The X Games is an amazing opportunity for these top racers to show off their skills in front of a huge live and television audience” stated Eric Peronnard, the creator of EnduroCross and X Games Enduro X Sports Organizer. “I especially enjoy seeing the young or relatively unknown riders get introduced to the world”, he continued.

If you want to see the riders that will be mixing it up at X Games 18, you can go to the Staples Center on Sunday, July 1st or catch many of those same riders at any of the other seven GEICO AMA EnduroCross events in 2012.

Round two of GEICO AMA EnduroCross championship will take place on Saturday, June 9th in the Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento, California. It will be the first ever visit to Northern California for the series and the last chance for non-qualified riders to earn a coveted X Games invitation.

SAN CLEMENTE, CA (May 15, 2012) — The snow has finally settled up on Mt. Bachelor, Oregon as Superpark 16 Presented by Gatorade is officially over. After five days of the most progressive park riding in history, the final product of Superpark 16 Presented by Gatorade is nothing short of remarkable.

Throughout the entire week up on Mt. Bachelor, over 300 riders per day were sessioning some of the most revolutionary and gigantic features ever seen at SNOWBOARDER Magazine’s Superpark, and the proof is in the video edits and photo galleries on snowboardermag.com. Riders like Halldór Helgason, Sebastién Toutant, Sage Kotsenburg, Bjorn Leines, Pat Moore, Andreas Wiig, Dan Brisse, Zak Marben and other established icons lapped alongside up-and-comers and future phenoms for five days straight on features built by a handful of the best terrain park builders in the world. SNOWBOARDER‘s Editor, Pat Bridges, elaborates, “After a decade-and-a-half of involvement in our Superpark franchise I can’t recall any being as rife with unforgettable riding as Superpark 16. To be joined by such an elite cadre of riders and to end the season on such a high note is what keeps the Superpark fire stoked. If we didn’t have video proof of everything that went down this week at Mt. Bachelor I’d perhaps write the unbelievable things I saw go down on-hill as merely one long hallucination.”

With the help of our presenting sponsor Gatorade, this year’s Superpark participants helped push the level of modern day freestyle snowboarding by keeping them hydrated on the hill all day long, and SNOWBOARDER would like to thank them for their continued and committed support of Superpark. Gatorade’s Director of Sports Marketing, Kenny Mitchell, says, “Gatorade was happy to support Superpark this year and wishes all the guys the best of luck as they continue pushing the sport forward.” Gatorade also gave away $2,500 for the Gatorade “Driven From Within” Superpark Standout award, which went to one rider that embodied the Superpark spirit by riding hard every day from sunup to sundown and hitting every feature on offer up on the hill. After the awards ceremony, it was none other than Seth Hill who walked away with the cash and the prize. Throughout Superpark 16, Seth rode like there was no tomorrow, lapping every feature built by Loon Mountain, NH, Mt. Bachelor, OR, Seven Springs, PA, and Boreal, CA, and both SNOWBOARDER and Gatorade were ecstatic to present Seth with the Gatorade “Driven From Within” Superpark Standout award.

SNOWBOARDER would like to thank Dave Rathman, Tom Lomax, Andy Goggins and the crew at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon for helping the SNOWBOARDER staff in every way imaginable, Gatorade for once again supporting Superpark, Prinoth-manufacturer of the Prinoth Bison X-the official snowcat of Superpark 16, Sunriver Resort for providing lodging to hundreds of riders and media, and of course, the build teams from Loon Mountain, NH, Mt. Bachelor, OR, Boreal, CA, and Seven Springs, PA for pushing together the best snowboard park ever constructed. Officially Underway

SAN CLEMENTE, CA (May 8, 2012) — For the sixteenth year in a row, snowboarding’s most prestigious annual event is underway. Superpark 16 has kicked off at Mt. Bachelor, OR and over 300 of the world’s best riders have converged on the hill to take it to some of the biggest features constructed this winter.

The invited builders include Loon Mountain, NH, Seven Springs, PA, Boreal, CA, and of course, the host mountain, Mt. Bachelor, OR. Manning the sticks of the Prinoth Bison X (the official snowcat of Superpark 16), these snow movers have amassed some of the most intense and electrifying features ever built in a snowboard park. SNOWBOARDER Editor Pat Bridges had this to say about the acquisition of Prinoth’s Bison X as an official Superpark sponsor. “The best terrain park builders in the world need the best tools to ply their trade at Superpark 16. These cat drivers are renowned for literally ‘pushing’ the limits of park creation and the Prinoth Bison X is the machine that will enable this progression to continue at Superpark 16.”

SNOWBOARDER has also brought back long time sponsor Gatorade to help keep the riders hydrated on the hill, and Kenny Mitchell, Gatorade’s Director of Sports Marketing states “Gatorade is happy to keep the guys fueled as they continue to push progression in snowboarding at this year’s Superpark.”

With a varied field and a talented pool of riders, Superpark 16 is set to be one for the record books. Snowboarders like Sebastién Toutant, Peter Line, Sage Kotsenburg, Gjermund Bråten, Forest Bailey, Bryan Fox, Austin Smith, and many more are lapping the respective lanes of the talented build teams and the imagery and video edits to come will be nothing short of awe-inspiring, which is exactly the Superpark ideology. Also, the newly-incepted Battle of the Brands will pit 16 of snowboarding’s biggest companies head-to-head in a video edit contest this summer and the crews have already been getting after it, so it’s sure to say that the edits from each team will be nothing short of remarkable.

Be sure to stay tuned to snowboardermag.com for daily recaps and exclusive edits, and pick up a copy on newsstands when the Superpark issue lands on shelves in January.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., (May 5, 2012)—Gabriel Medina (BRA), 18, has claimed the 2012 ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro title, defeating veteran campaigner Glenn Hall (IRL), 30, in two-to-four foot waves at Lower Trestles. The win earns him a $40,000 paycheck, a 14-karat solid-gold spike (the richest trophy in surfing valued at $30,000) and major ASP World Ranking points.

Medina got the best of an opening exchange against Hall and held the lead throughout the heat’s entirety, marking him as the second consecutive Brazilian to win the Nike Lowers Pro following Miguel Pupo (BRA), 20, in 2011.

“This is a very special win and it has been a long week,” Medina said. “I’m going to Brazil now with more confidence and this has been great.”

Medina’s run at the Nike Lowers Pro was one of complete dominance, as the young Brazilian earned several of the event’s top scores including the only flawless 10-point ride en route to the event’s highest heat-total of 19.80 out of 20 in his Semifinals victory over Adrian Buchan (AUS), 29.

“I love Trestles so much,” Medina said. “It’s just such a good wave and it’s one of my favorites, I just don’t even have words to explain how I’m feeling right now. I’m stoked.”

Glenn Hall proved to be the dark-horse of the event, consistently putting on solid performances on both his forehand and backhand to top ASP World Championship Tour surfers Jeremy Flores (FRA), 24, and John John Florence (HAW), 19, on his way to the final, but was unable to surpass Medina, finishing runner-up overall.

“It’s Lowers, it can turn on or off at any time in the day. You kind of have to be on to it and luck has to go your way as well,” Hall said. “I had a few lucky heats earlier in the event and that heat was funny with Gabriel. I thought we were going to have an interference in the beginning and they didn’t call it, but it’s all good though. He surfed well and he won.”

Hall, who has been knocking on the door for elite ASP World Championship Tour qualification for several years, is hoping his result at the Nike Lowers Pro kick-starts his qualification campaign for 2013.

“This is a great result for sure,” Hall said. “The way the system is now, if you don’t get results in PRIME events, you don’t qualify, so I’m relieved with this result and am in a good position to try and qualify now. I’m going to do all of the PRIMES and see how we go.”

John John Florence was dangerous at this year’s Nike Lowers Pro, constantly dismantling the Lowers right-handers with stylish carves and massive aerials. Florence launched a full-rotation 360 air in his Semifinal against Glenn Hall for a 9-point score, but was unable to find a second backup score and finished equal 3rd overall.

“I kept having these slow heats and I tried to get a quick start and I just couldn’t put it together,” Florence said. “I had the one big air and got a good score and only needed a small score, I got it and then Micro got a score at the end.”

Florence’s equal 3rd place finish marked the end to an amazing win-streak for the young Hawaiian, who had consecutively won the ASP PRIME at Sunset Beach, the ASP 5-Star at Pipeline and the ASP PRIME at Margaret River. His equal 3rd placeresult at the Nike Lowers Pro continues to secure his position among the top competitors on the ASP World Ranking.

“I’m stoked to have made the Semis, but it would have been nice to have made the Final,” Florence said. “I was having fun and the waves have been fun all week, so I’m stoked.”

Adrian Buchan consistently put on polished performances at this year’s Nike Lowers Pro, but fell short of a Final berth when Gabriel Medina surfed a near-perfect 19.80 heat in their Semifinal clash and finished with an equal 3rd place result.

“Gabe surfed an amazing heat and obviously got the jump on me from the start,” Buchan said. “I didn’t feel like I ever really hit top gear. I feel like I surfed well in some of my other heats and didn’t catch the best waves, but I guess that’s something I can take away from this event and to still walk away with a 3rd, I’m happy. That heat was disappointing, but you can’t let Gabe have any of those lefts.”

Gabriel Medina won MVP for day four for an outstanding single maneuver. The win pocketed him $500 and the golden jersey for the day. Daily MVP winners John John Florence, Dane Reynolds and Gabriel Medina all went head-to-head in the Final Four, with Medina chosen as the event’s most groundbreaking surfer and overall event MVP adding another $1,500 to his day’s earnings.
Irvine, CA (May 4, 2012) – If The 2012 GEICO AMA EnduroCross championship, presented by Lucas Oil kicked off with a bang inside the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Colton Haaker got his first ever GEICO AMA EnduroCross main event win by leading every lap of the main event. The Lucas Oil backed Kawasaki rider withstood heavy pressure from Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Justin Soule for the duration but never put a wheel wrong. KTM’s Taddy Blazusiak came back from a first turn crash to finish third. After going undefeated in 2011, Blazusiak had a tough day and crashed a few times in practice and during his heat race, which forced him to the Semi. Beta’s Cody Webb finished fourth ahead of Taylor Robert rounded out the top five. Mike Brown, Cory Graffunder, Kyle Redmond, Kevin Rookstool, Brobby Prochnau and Destry Abbott rounded out the top eleven riders that made the main event.

Mike Brown got the day started off by setting the fastest lap during the hot laps, where the riders do a single lap against the clock. Blazusiak finished second ahead of Webb, Graffunder and Robert.

The evening also included the support classes. The Open Amateur class, which was won by Max Gerston over Bryan Roper and Shane Cuthbertson. Kurt Nicoll won the Vet class over Josh Adams and Rich Black. Phil Smage, won the TrialsCross class ahead of Zach Sweeten and Ty Cullins.

The Women’s class was won KTM’s Maria Forsburg. Kacy Martinez passed Forsburg and led for a little while to make it interesting but a mistake forced her to settle for second. Louise Forsley finished third with Chantelle Bykerk fourth and Nicole Bradford rounding out the top five.

The Nike Lowers Pro attracts several elite ASP World Championship Tour surfers and the finest up-and-coming pedigree to Lowers’ flawless surf, which consistently provides the perfect platform for a high-performance showdown. The Nike Lowers Pro, now in its fifth consecutive year, touts a $250,000 prize purse, a plethora of points towards the ASP World Rankings and the most valuable trophy in surfing, a one-of-a-kind 14-karat gold railroad spike worth more than $30,000.

Dane Reynolds (Ventura, CA), 26, got the best of a slow heat against hard-working Brazilian Heitor Alves (BRA), 30, in the Round of 24 and roared to life in the afternoon, topping Granger Larsen (HAW), 22, with the day’s highest scores of a near-perfect 9.80 single wave score en route to a combined heat-total of 18.63 out of 20 with his unpredictable dissection of the Lower Trestles right-handers.

“I’ve been feeling really sketchy this event and been having unsuccessful free-surfs,” Reynolds said. “I was feeling better in that one. I had been riding a different board in every heat and I rode this one this morning and just stuck with it.”

Gabriel Medina (BRA), 18, battled back in an action-packed heat against Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA), 27. Medina was in need of an excellent ride with time winding down in the Round of 16 match and launched a gigantic air-reverse to earn a 9.50 out of 10 to solidify a victory over the Huntington Beach surfer in a high-scoring heat of 17.96 to 17.43.

“I was comfortable and I knew that was going to be a tough heat,” Medina said. “Brett (Simpson) surfed really well, he had the 9 and the 8 and it was the hardest heat that I’ve had here. I was just waiting for one more wave and I fell on the one before. I needed the last one and I went big and got the score.”

Medina, who will face Dane Reynolds in the Quarterfinals, admittedly has his eye on the coveted 14-karat gold-spike trophy and the Nike Lowers Pro title tomorrow.

“I’m excited for tomorrow and I want to try and win the contest,” Medina said. “That’s my goal. Hopefully tomorrow we have good waves.”

Jeremy Flores (FRA), 24, also took out two heat wins today. The talented surfer from Reunion Island notched his first victory over Sebastian Zietz (HAW), 24, in the Round of 24, despite breaking his board, and went on to win on a borrowed board from former ASP Women’s World Champion Lisa Anderson (Huntington Beach, CA), 43.

“I broke my board on this lay-back and Lisa was really nice and let me borrow her board,” Flores said. “It actually goes pretty good, but it’s a lot different from what I’m used to riding. I was lazy this morning and had a hard time waking up. Early morning heats are not really my thing. I didn’t bring that many boards. That one I broke was my best one and I don’t know, I might keep surfing this one.”

Flores went on to get the best of a high-scoring affair over Californian Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), 20, on an unfamiliar backup board in his Round of 16 heat, but looked in rhythm with today’s conditions regardless of his struggle with equipment.

“I got two really good rights with a long wall on the whole wave,” Flores said. “I think I was lucky to get those waves and get some scores. I was kind of trying out this board, I haven’t ridden it in a couple of years so I didn’t really know how it was going to go and it went pretty good.”

Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), 23, runner-up at last year’s Nike Lowers Pro, continued to keep the hope of a potential local champion alive when he defeated ASP World Championship Tour veteran C.J. Hobgood (Melbourne, FL), 32, with a dominant performance on both the lefts and rights in his heats.

“It’s just fun to start your heat with rhythm,” Gudauskas said. “I got off to a good start and then it seemed like it just hit the brakes and we didn’t have any waves. Luckily I had that first score and I wouldn’t have been as comfortable had I not.”

John John Florence (Oahu, HI), 19, further asserted his dominance in the Nike Lowers Pro, topping his idol Cory Lopez (FL), 35, in the Round of 16.

“The waves were super fun and I was nervous going against Cory (Lopez),” Florence said. “He’s been one of my favorite surfers since I started surfing and surfing against him is pretty scary. He’s so consistent and he’s got airs down like nothing. He’s been looking so sharp and I’m just really happy to have made it through that heat.”

Florence, a progressive leader of the next generation, has appreciated the high-scores awarded for the variety of both power-surfing and above-the-lip maneuvers at this year’s Nike Lowers Pro.

“I love it,” Florence said. “Not everybody surfs the same, everyone has a different style and I like that the judges have been rewarding guys for the way they’re surfing.”

Gabriel Medina won MVP for day three for an outstanding single maneuver. The win pocketed him $500 and the golden jersey for the day. MVP candidates for day four are John John Florence, Jeremy Flores, Dane Reynolds and Cory Lopez.
Official Surfline Forecast for Saturday 5/5
Chest-head high sets will show for the finals off a mix of South-SSW swells. Minor NW wind swell mixes in. Good conditions overall. Expect a mix of mainly slow easing SSW swell (210-190 deg) and new/building South swell (190-175 deg). Minor NW wind swell joins in. Sets hang mostly around chest-head high (4-5′ faces), with occasional slightly overhead waves/peaks. NOTE – Lefts open up a little more on the more southerly angled lines, as rights become a little more vertical and racier, sometimes sectioning out. The minor NW wind swell mixing in will cause some sections as well. Calm to light/variable wind in the early morning (likely light offshore at dawn), before a light to moderate SW veering West sea breeze slowly develops through the day. Surface conditions stay fairly clean all day with help from the kelp. Also, expect clouds in the early morning with possible fog, but gradually clearing up some through the morning and into the afternoon.

Medina unveiled his progressive wizardry on the lefthand ramps of Lowers today, launching the highest scores of Nike Lowers Pro competition. The high-flying Brazilian took top honors, winning his Round of 48 heat and went on to take the day’s highest single-wave score of 9.87 for a huge air-reverse while surfing a near-perfect heat of 19.53 out of 20 in his Round of 24 bout.

“That was fun and both the lefts and rights are pretty good,” Medina said. “I had a good heat and I think it’s because I woke up really early, at five in the morning, and got down here in the dark. I think it helped me get ready for my heat. The non-elimination round is great because it’s no pressure too because everyone can show how they surf.”

Heitor Alves (BRA), 30, who is consistently a standout at Trestles, was another Brazilian goofy-footer to put on a dominant performance at the Nike Lowers Pro. The passionate Brazilian earned one of the day’s highest single-wave scores of 9.50 out of 10 with tenacious forehand gouges on a steep lefthand wall at Lowers.

“I had a great time again. I really like this wave and I just tried my best out there and won my heat.” Alves said. “I surfed before my heat and knew the sets were slow. I wanted to wait for the best ones and I got lucky.”

Fred Patacchia (Oahu, HI), 30, was one of several goofy-footers to dominate the rights of Lowers on his backhand today. The powerful Hawaiian netted a 17.17 out of 20 heat total with committed backhand gaffs on two waves to advance through to the Round of 16.

“I think with Lowers, you’ve got to watch it a lot,” Patacchia said. “It’s constantly changing and I try and get down here a few heats earlier and know what I want to do and have a game-plan.”

Patacchia, a veteran campaigner on the ASP World Championship Tour, is now out to capitalize on his experience with man-on-man competition as the Nike Lowers Pro enters the latter rounds.

“With the priority situation, it feels a lot more like a World Tour event and you cantreat it like that,” Patacchia said. “The inexperience of some of the guys coming up will really show and guys like the Hobgoods will really take advantage of that. It’s a good experience for them and sometimes they surprise us. With only two guys out at Lowers, you really can’t ask for anything more.”

Patacchia, who won the Nike Lowers Pro in its first year as an ASP PRIME rated event, has his sights set on a second prestigious title as well as the coveted 14-karat solid-gold railroad spike trophy.

“The year I won, the spike wasn’t pure gold, and I’m hoping to snag that thing,” Patacchia said. “I’m feeling good and my boards are working really well. Everyone says you have to take it heat-by-heat and it’s true, but my eye is on that prize.”

Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), 23, who finished runner-up at last year’s Nike Lowers Pro, continued to ignite his home break and took an impressive win over veteran ASP World Championship Tour surfer Taylor Knox (Carlsbad, CA), 40, and former Nike Lowers Pro winner Gabe Kling (St. Augustine, FL), 31, in the no-losers Round of 24 with a solid 17.87 heat total.

“It was fun because it was a gentleman’s style heat,” Gudauskas said. “We were talking out there and it was a really special heat. I was stoked because I guessed if I did well here that I’d go do Brazil, so we’ll see how it goes, hopefully I can keep going.”

Mark Occhilupo (AUS), 45, continued his comeback, and the surfing icon emerged victorious once again today, eliminating top seed Michel Bourez (PYF), 26, to advance to the Round of 24. Occhilupo has admittedly struggled to earn his desired results at Lower Trestles over the course of his career, but is finding success at this year’s Nike Lowers Pro.

“Trestles hasn’t really been kind to me over the years,” Occhilupo said. “I don’t think I’ve ever made the Quarterfinals, so to make these heats has been great. I love Trestles, even though it’s a hard wave to surf for me, but I’m stoked. It’s great surfing with the young guys and the kids are surfing amazing. I’m just working my way through the draw and taking it one heat at a time.”

Dane Reynolds won MVP for day two for an outstanding single maneuver. The win pocketed him $500 and the golden jersey for the day. MVP candidates for day there are Gabriel Medina, John John Florence, Patrick Gudauskas, Brett Simpson and Dane Reynolds. Fans can vote at NikeLowersPro.com/MVP to decide who will win $500 and wear the golden jersey tomorrow.

  Starts Monday, May 7th, 2012

SAN CLEMENTE, CA (May 2, 2012) — The stage is set once again for the premier park shoot in snowboarding. Bachelor, OR. Riders like Sebastién Toutant, Gjermund Bråten, Sage Kotsenberg, Tyler Flanagan, Andreas Wiig, Pat Moore, Peter Line, Zac Marben, Austin Smith, Bryan Fox, Jess Kimura, Dylan Thompson, Gulli Gudmondson, Jake Olsen Elm., and many more will be picking apart Mt.
The park crews have already arrived at Mt. Bachelor, OR and they’re moving massive amounts of snow on the slope with in the Prinoth Bison X, which is now the official snowcat of Superpark. With the support from the fine people at Prinoth, Superpark 16 is shaping up as we speak and will be ready to play host to some formidable freestyle shredding. SNOWBOARDER Editor Pat Bridges had this to say about the acquisition of Prinoth as a Superpark sponsor. “The best terrain park builders in the world need the best tools to ply their trade at Superpark 16. These cat drivers are renowned for literally “pushing” the limits of park creation and the Prinoth Bison X is the machine that will enable this progression to continue at Superpark 16.”

Also new to Superpark 16 this year is “The Battle of the Brands,” a video contest pitting 16 of the foremost brands in snowboarding against each other in a head-to-head, bracketed video contest this summer. Each company involved is sending their team to Bachelor with a filmer in tow to document their Superpark experience, and when the spray settles, the videos will be posted on snowboardermag.com this summer for our viewers to vote. The winning team receives an all-expense paid and hard-earned trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to wind down from a hard and laborious winter. Editor Pat Bridges had some remarks regarding the addition of The Battle of the Brands to snowboardermag.com‘s prominent web presence. “SNOWBOARDER is really excited to introduce The Battle Of The Brands team edit competition to the Superpark 16 program. Not only will The Battle Of The Brands allow companies like Oakley, Volcom, Forum, Nike, Quiksilver, K2, Ride and ThirtyTwo to showcase the depth of riding talent on hand at Mt. Bachelor, OR for Superpark 16 but it will also create an ideal opportunity for these teams to test their skills and creativity against one another on an equal, albeit frozen, playing field.”

Once again, Gatorade has signed on to keep the riders hydrated on hill all day long. SNOWBOARDER couldn’t be happier to have Gatorade back as a sponsor of Superpark, and the sentiments are mirrored by Gatorade’s Director of Sports Marketing, Kenny Mitchell, as he said, “Gatorade is excited be sponsoring Superpark again this year. These guys are out here working hard from sun up to sundown, which embodies the Gatorade spirit of being driven from within.”

Keep up-to-date with the daily happenings on the hill, check snowboardermag.com for recaps, photo galleries, and exclusive video edits every day next week, because Superpark 16 is set to go off.
