SURFER Art Director
Location: San Clemente, CAOverview:
SURFER Magazine is looking for an experienced (non-manager) Art Director for our San Clemente, CA office. SURFER has been the mirror to the surf lifestyle and culture for more than half a century.
Job Summary and Responsibilities
- Responsible for layout and design of all editorial content of a monthly magazine, as well as a newsstand-only special.
- Layouts should sustain and evolve the look developed for that particular magazine.
- The art director is responsible for editing photos and submitting them to our pre-press for processing. Approved and finalized files will be processed according to Source Interlink’s guidelines. The art director will review final proofs and request color corrections if necessary.
- Provide logos and other artwork when requested for marketing projects.
- Other duties and tasks as assigned.
Education/Experience:
- BFA in Graphic Design or bachelor’s degree in Arts or equivalent knowledge base.
- 4 to 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous experience in magazine design, preferably with a monthly publication, is required. Should have thorough knowledge of prepress.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong Photoshop and InDesign skills are a must, plus a working knowledge of Illustrator. Must be willing to learn and apply the latest Photoshop techniques.
- Attention to detail and basic layout fundamentals are critical. Exceptionally detail orientated and deadline orientated.
- Interest and exploration of current design trends is desired. Must have the ability to add a creative touch to layouts for a cutting edge, modern presentation.
- Strong communications skills: must be able to collaborate with the editor and staff to create ideas for photo shoots, and art direct those photo shoots when possible.
- Comfort and ease working well with others in a team environment
- Proven track record of talent and innovation in design, utilizing various creative methods with an emphasis on the cutting edge of current design trends.
- Interest in web and other digital media, such as iMags and app design is desired.
- Must have the ability to deliver a product that resonates with the appropriate demographic.

Job Summary and Responsibilities
Cultivate and maintain an active base of accounts, providing marketing suggestions and beneficial solutions to the client’s needs.
- Sell print advertising space, web page digital ads, event marketing & sponsorships per goals outlined in Plan
- Generate revenue through advertising sales, renewal and existing business

Job Summary and Responsibilities
- Assign, decelop, top edit, copy edit, write, an dupload original online content. Original content is posted to Powder.com daily.
- Collaborate closely with the editorial team to integrate magazine content to Powder.com, POWDER digital properties (iPad, iPhone, etc.), and future digital projects.
- Manage all web-based initiatives, including buyers guides, newsletters and contests, and execute assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Collaborate closely with the marketing team to ensure brand events are represented online.
- Manage POWDER’s social media channels through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, etc.
Skill Requirements:
- AP-style journalist background desired. Know how to report on variety of subjects and write AP-style and longer narrative pieces for Powder.com on deadline.
- Strong knowledge or WordPress and HTML required.

- The understanding that this is not a 9-5 job. It is a lifestyle decision, meaning you won’t work regular hours and you’ll be expected to work on journalist time.

Associate Video Producer

Assist Bike Magazine’s editorial team with the nuts and bolts of journalism. Primary duties to include fact checking stories, press release follow-up, research and proofreading pages. We’re talking the old fashioned way. That means you need to be able to pick up the phone and call sources to verify information and ask questions in a professional and timely manner. Assist in writing captions and headlines and contribute to Bike’s social media outlets. You will also have the opportunity to cut your reporting and writing teeth on short pieces for Bikemag.com and the magazine.
